Hal Newhouser went 9 solid innings and Hank Greenberg slammed a homerun andhad 4 RBI as the Boston AL Red Sox were badly beaten by the incredibleDetroit Tigers, 14 to 0. Greenberg had a big evening at the plate. He laced a one-base hit scoring arun in the 2nd inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 4th inning. Afterthe 4th inning, neither team was able to score. For Newhouser(27-5) it was his 5th shutout this year. Tex Hughson(23-10) wascharged with the loss. He allowed Detroit 8 runs in 2 innings of work. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Hughson was lavish inhis praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for along night. Newhouser brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff andwas able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitchesthe entire game!
