Subject: 1992 World Series game 6

The Padres scored first when Jimmy Jones GIDPed into a score in the second inning, and added added another in the fifth thanks to a Jones leadoff single/WP/single/FC. Station-to-station baseball ruled the first five innings, which saw San Diego holding a 2-0 lead.

Top six, the M's tried to start the merry-go-round that dwells in the heart of Seattle's batting order, the 3-4-5-6 mashers that they rode to the AL pennant. Griffey singled, Edgar singled, Sorrento singled to make it 2-1. Storm Davis then came in, promptly throwing a run-scoring wild pitch, then stanched the bleeding with a 2-2 tie score.

The Padres roared back in the bottom of the sixth, as Chad Curtis' two-run homer chased Randy Johnson and reinstalled the Pads' two-run lead, 4-2.

In the seventh, The M's again found the keys to carousel, to reclaim the lead: Griffey RBI double, Edgar RBI single (4-4), Edgar SB (!), Sorrento RBI single (5-4). Could the vaunted Seattle bullpen hold the lead?

Relievers matched zeroes for a full inning, but Brian Harvey ran into trouble in the eighth, exiting with two runners on and two outs. Eckersley was summoned for -- Seattle hoped -- a four-out save. The first out was no problem. 5-4 M's after eight.

Seattle added a much-desired insurance run on a Lofton single and steal, followed by a hit-and-run RBI single by Willie Randolph. 6-4 M's.

Bottom nine, Eckersley coughed up a one-out double to Harold Reynolds. Tony Fernandez singled him home (6-5). Fernandez stole second, and Gwynn (who had been 0-4) singled him in, tying the game at six. Eckersley then retired Sheffield and McGriff, guaranteeing extra innings.

The bats went quiet in the tenth, and again for the M's in the top of the eleventh. Bottom eleven, Rob Dibble gave up a two-out single to the bionic Fernandez (now 5-for-6 on the day). Fernandez again stole second, and Gwynn played the walkoff hero, with a seeing-eye single through short. Season over.

Tony Gwynn, identified with his franchise more than any non-Ripken player of his era, earns a ring on a signature single punched through the 5.5 hole. Could there be a more fitting climax for the Pads' first championship?

Congratulations to Mike Tomeo and the balanced potency of his 1992 World Champion San Diego Padres!
