You can't play the Reds every week. :-) Besides, we held Bagwell to 0 for 4 in the 3rd game. Alan From: mailto:[email protected] Sent: Friday, January 22, 2016 1:57 PM Subject: RE: [SmileyList] Reds @ Expos Don't you love it when a team rolls into town with a massively cold hitter? You know there has to be a reckoning you just pray to your higher power that it won't be against you? Welcome back Jeff Bagwell. Steve B. [SmileyList] [email protected] Date: Fri, 22 Jan 2016 08:14:15 -0500 To: [email protected] Subject: [SmileyList] Reds @ Expos [1 Attachment] Reds bat 24 times with RISP, get a whopping TWO hits, out-LOB the Expos 24-11, choke up two losses on the final pitch of the game, then come up with a big surprise in the finale to avoid a completely winless week.... Game 1: Down 2-0 almost from the last note of "O, Canada", the Reds battled back twice to tie the contest with the score being knotted at 3-3 after Bret Boone's solo homer in the CIN 7th. Our utter lack of clutch hitting (0 for 9 with RISP; MON: 4 for 8) and the 3 errors the we committed went a long way to help the Expos win this one, but it still required yet another choke from our Ace Arsonist, the one with the excellent card and the 6.75 ERA. Cincy error #3 opened the bottom of the 10th for the Expos and Scott Sullivan unraveled from there, providing massively underachieving Jeff Bagwell's second gopher of the day. Final score: 6-3 in 10. ============================================================================ ==== Game 2: CIN starter John Smiley threw 69 pitches in 6 innings of work, and 68 of them were pretty good. Naturally the one that wasn't was a 2-out (what else?) 3-run gopher to the suddenly red-hot Bagwell. Meanwhile the impotent Cincy offense managed to eke out a single run here & there, two of them on solo homers and the last of the two coming from Eddie Taubensee leading off the top of the 9th. Unfortunately the comeback was wasted when we queued up an instant replay of the opener, Sullivan (1-4, 6.43) choking again in extra innings. Final score: 4-3 in 11. Four MON pitchers limited the Reds to just 6 hits in 11 frames, yet we still managed to LOB 50% more runners than the Expos and hit into our second timely rally-killing DP of the series as well. ============================================================================ ==== Game 3: After two games like those, what chance did Luckless Chris Holt have against the immortal Pedro Martinez? Cincy's triple-threat offensive attack of zero clutch hitting, an excessive LOB "advantage" over our opponent and timely GIDP galore was on full display in this one too, making the task even more impossible. But wait: a blown-x triple and an error by the MON defense helped the Reds to 2 early runs, and Pedro's wildness (4 IP, 5 walks) did him in during our 5-run 5th which resulted in an 8-1 lead at that time. Willie Greene delivered a 3-run homer on Pedro's 91st and last pitch of the day and the CIN offense went back to being comatose against 3 Expo relievers, but 8 runs turned out to be sufficient. The Reds were able to coast from there to an 8-2 win, with their manager being smart for a change and leaving the bullpen out of it. Holt scattered 6 hits (4 of them for extra bases), and walked nobody in his complete-game effort. In fact, Cincy pitchers issued a total of ZERO free passes and amassed 20 strikeouts in the 3 games but rarely got the outcome they merited.
