The Orioles offense exploded in Milwaukee but came up one timely hit short of a sweep, winning two of three.
Game 1: BAA 11, MLA 2
Milwaukee starter Cal Eldred served up gopher balls to Jeffrey Hammonds in the 1st, Lenny Webster in the 2nd, and Cal Ripken in the 3rd (with a runner on) to put the Orioles up 4-0.� In the 4th, Hammonds drove in a run with a sac fly before Geronimo Berroa joined the homer parade with a two-run shot for a 7-0 lead.� The homer streak ended in the 5th, although Mike Bordick singled in another insurance run.� Eldred was still in the game to pitch a perfect 6th inning but was finally pulled in the 7th after an RBI groundout gave the O's their ninth run; two more followed in the top of the 8th thanks to a Berroa double and another RBI groundout.� Baltimore starter Scott Erickson's shutout bid ended with two outs in the 8th when Todd Dunn tripled home the first Brewers run; the other scored on Gregg Jefferies's sac fly in the ninth.� Erickson went the distance to improve his record to 10-9.
Game 2: MLA 4, BAA 2
As in Game 1, Baltimore started the scoring with a solo HR in the first, this time by Midre Cummings, but Brewers starter Mike Morgan didn't make those a habit like Eldred had in Game 1.� Orioles starter Gabe White was cruising until the 4th, when Jim Thome hit a two-run double and scored on a Matt Mieske single to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.� Dunn added a solo HR in the 5th, his first of the year.� Baltimore had opportunities galore after that but could only muster one run in the 8th on an RBI single by Roberto Alomar. The O's left 7 on base (vs. only 1 for Milwaukee) and hit into three double plays.� Cummings finished the game a double short of the cycle.
Game 3: BAA 10, MLA 4
Unlike the first two games, the O's didn't get a one-out solo homer in the first; in fact, they didn't get a hit until the 3rd, by which time the Brewers led 2-0 thanks to Dunn's bases-loaded single in the 2nd.� But in the 3rd, Cummings tripled, Bordick doubled him home, Brady Anderson singled and stole second, Craig Biggio his a go-ahead double, Hammonds walked, and Milwaukee starter Bartolo Colon headed for the showers.� After a Rafael Palmeiro single, Cal Ripken drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2 Orioles. �(The inning ended when Yamil Benitez drew an unfavorable split card with a 50-50 chance of a homer.) �In the 5th, Anderson and Hammonds both doubled, and a balk call set up Palmeiro's sac fly to push the lead to 6-2.� The O's added runs in the 6th on a sac fly by Bordick and the 7th on a Ripken single.� Orioles starter Charles Nagy didn't pitch especially well but made it through seven innings.� Mark Guthrie relieved Nagy in the 8th and got roughed up a bit, giving up RBI singles to Jose Vizcaino and Fernando Vina before a double play helped bail him out.� Baltimore added their last two runs in the 9th on a single by BJ Surhoff and a sac fly by Webster -- both of whom had entered the game in the 8th as defensive replacements. �
