Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 21 (plus Week 22 CM)
After blowing a five-game lead last week, the Orioles came within one out (or one 9th inning error) of a much-needed four game sweep but settled for winning 3 of 4 in Toronto.
Game 1: BAA 8, TOA 2
In the top of the 2nd, B.J. Surhoff tripled off Toronto starter Roger Clemens and Cal Ripken brought him home with a sac fly; Midre Cummings then doubled and scored on a single by newly acquired 4th string catcher Kelly Stinnett to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. O's starter Scott Erickson made the lead stand up for, oh, about 5 minutes as Doug Strange tied it with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning. In the 5th, three walks by Clemens set up a clutch two-out, bases-clearing double by Rafael Palmeiro for a 5-2 Orioles lead. In the 7th, again with two out, Palmeiro doubled in two more runs and scored on a Surhoff single . Erickson only allowed three hits in 8+ innings of work; despite an ERA almost two runs higher, Erickson matched Clemens with a season record of 12-11.
Game 2: BAA 2, TOA 0 (15)
Through 6 innings, Toronto's Pat Hentgen and Baltimore's Armando Reynoso allowed plenty of baserunners but no runs. Reynoso left after 6 innings due to usage issues and the Orioles burned through relievers, while Hentgen incredibly remained on the mound for 11 shutout innings. The game remained scoreless until the 15th, when a big double by Brady Anderson set up a decisive two-run single by Jeffrey Hammonds. With the Orioles bullpen depleted, closer Randy Myers had to pitch 3 innings to earn the win.
Game 3: TOA 6, BAA 3
Strange homered off Charles Nagy in the 2nd to give Toronto a one-run lead. In the 5th, the Orioles tied it on an RBI single by Roberto Alomar and took the lead on a wild pitch by Blue Jays starter Woody Williams. A Tom Prince homer in the bottom of the 7th tied the game at 2-2. In the top of the 8th, Craig Biggio's solo HR put Baltimore back on top, but the inning ended when Palmeiro unsuccessfully tried to score on a Surhoff double. The fatigued Myers came on in the 9th to preserve a one-run lead, A two-base error by Geronimo Berroa helped the Blue Jays load the bases with no outs. Armando Benitez relieved Myers and got two outs before serving up a game-winning grand slam to Shane Mack. Myers took the loss with 3 unearned runs, while Williams held on for a complete game to improve his record to 7-16.
Game 4: BAA 4, TOA 3
Shawn Green tripled and beat a throw home on a fielder's choice to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 1st inning lead, but Midre Cummings went deep to tie it in the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd, Baltimore loaded the bases with no outs but could only muster one run on a double play groundout. Baltimore took a 3-1 lead in the 4th, essentially for free -- Ripken singled, advanced on a groundout and a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch by Toronto starter Chris Carpenter. There was no more scoring until the 7th. In the top of that inning, Cummings tripled and Mike Bordick singled him home for a three-run Orioles lead, but the Blue Jays matched that in the bottom of the frame as pinch-hitter Shannon Stewart tripled and scored on a groundout. In the 9th, fatigued Orioles starter Curt Schilling hit the leadoff batter, but the O's turned a big double play ahead of a homer by Green, and Schilling struck out his 10th batter to end the game and improve his record to 17-9.
After going 4-for-8 in the first game, Baltimore went just 3-for-24 with RISP. However, Toronto's RISP results were even worse -- they went 1-for-29 for the series.
