Any chances the Orioles had of going home and sweeping the Yankees for a miraculous division title ended ignominiously in Toronto, where the Jays took two of three despite being outscored 15-11.
Game 1: TOA 4, BAA 0
Juan Samuel led off the bottom of the 1st with a single. stole 2nd base, and scored the game's first run on a two-out single by Tom Prince. In the 2nd, after Joe Carter homered, Samuel struck again with an RBI single; Carter added an RBI double in the 3rd to give Toronto starter Roger Clemens a 4-0 cushion. As it turned out, that was three more than Clemens needed, as he notched 13 strikeouts and cruised to a 5-hit shutout for win #16. The Orioles' struggles with RISP continued -- they went 0 for 10.
Game 2: BAA 13, TOA 1
Baltimore's streak of going hitless with runners in scoring position ended in the top of the 1st when Rafael Palmeiro doubled in two runs and scored on a single by BJ Surhoff, although Samuel led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer for a 3-1 score.� In the 2nd, Roberto Alomar singled in a run and Palmeiro tripled for two more, chasing Blue Jays starter Pat Hentgen. Cal Ripken tacked on an RBI double for a 7-1 Baltimore lead.� The O's tacked on two more in the 4th on doubles by Ripken and Surhoff and an RBI single by Todd Pratt that made it 10-1.� The hit parade continued in the 5th; Alomar singled in two runs and scored on the third double of the game by Ripken, who then scored on a Surhoff single.� Curiously, Orioles starters Geronimo Berroa and Mike Bordick went a combined 0-for-11 while the other seven starters averaged three hits apiece.� Orioles starter Armando Reynoso wasn't exactly Clemens, but he only allowed four hits in 7 IP to record his 7th win.� The loss was Hentgen's 18th of the year. � ��
Game 3: TOA 6, BAA 2
In an effort to finally get Curt Schilling his 20th win, the Orioles juggled the schedule to start him against Toronto's Ricky Bones (bearer of a 12.79 ERA.) �What could possibly go wrong with this plan? �
In the 3rd inning, Baltimore took a 1-0 lead on a Palmeiro double, but back-to-back doubles by Jacob Brumfield and Moises Alou put Toronto ahead 2-1.� Benito Santiago homered in the 5th to make it 3-1, a bad omen for Schilling as Carlos Delgado and Jose Cruz Jr. went back-to-back in the 6th for a 5-1 score.� Even Brumfield, who entered the series hitting .106 and slugging .213, went yard off Schilling in the 7th.� Meanwhile, the O's went 2 for 7 with RISP, and one of those hits led to a putout at the plate.� Bordick's RBI double in the 9th was too little, too late. Despite giving up 10 hits to Schilling's 8, Bones went the distance for his first win of the season.
