Bob Gibson came through with a solid 8 innings at Busch Stadium as the mighty
St. Louis Cardinals staged a comeback win over the San Francisco Giants by
the count of 3 to 2.
St. Louis had the winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs. Orlando Cepeda
led off and he was hit by a pitch. After an out was recorded, Johnny Romano
came up and he drew a walk. One out later, Dal Maxvill came to the plate and
drew a walk to load the bases. Frank Linzy then uncorked a wild pitch
resulting in a run. Bobby Tolan stepped into the box and drew a walk to load
the bases. Curt Flood added to the rally and hit a single making St. Louis
the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. The game was a
scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
The victory went to Nelson Briles(2-3) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Linzy(4-3) suffered the loss in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Cepeda
said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole
way.'
